John was born in Dumfries in 1952. Completely self-taught his paintings can be found mainly at the Landscapes Art Gallery & Studio in Dumfries but also on occasion alongside other prominent artists in the many mixed exhibitions that are held in Kirkcudbright and Dumfries and Galloway throughout the year. Instrumental in compiling and illustrating the much acclaimed book "Sang 0' The Nith" published by Dumfries and Galloway Libraries in 1996, his watercolours portray well the beautiful landscape of South West Scotland.

Although very few copies remain, the book can be borrowed from any of the local libraries.

The illustrations within are indicative of the artists landscape work and can be useful to overview the many prints which have found homes all over the world. Some contemporary work is also on display in the gallery along with a wide selection of Ltd Ed Prints and local books notably the 'Through-the-Lens' series of photographic images, which show South West Scotland as it was at the turn of the century.

Inspired by his late father a well-known local poet, some of his paintings carry complimentary poetry giving an added dimension to his work. A new illustrated book of poetry and prose, entitled An Experience of Drowning, is published in December 2002.

His gallery, which can be found near the famous 'Theatre Royal' in Dumfries, is only a few minutes walk from the town centre and is used as a working studio. The public are quite welcome to come and watch the artist at work. John Clark can be contacted either through the gallery or on 01387-263280, or e-mail.

Original commissions depending on size and amount of work involved can be commissioned currently from as little as £95 up to £750 (unframed). Although he paints mainly watercolour landscapes he will consider other subjects on request. Free short stay parking is available outside the Gallery. Longer-term parking is only a short walk away at the large Brooms Road car park which services Dumfries Town Centre.

Whilst John's work is always on display at his own Gallery, he also exhibits in the Midsteeple Gallery, Dumfries, and at Carberry Crafts, 4 The Square, New Abbey, by Dumfries.

John contributes to Kirkcudbright Artists' Town by regularly exhibiting at the Harbour Cottage Gallery.
