Ian McGibbon
I started painting seriously about 18 years
ago. In the next few years I was a member of
an art group in Marchington, Staffordshire.
Until that time I concentrated mainly on landscapes,
then started to paint flowers and was encouraged
to continue with floral work when two of my
early flower paintings were accepted for exhibition
in Derby Art Gallery.
I moved to Kirkcudbright in 1998 but before
this was Chairman of Tutbury Arts Group in Staffordshire.

My paintings have been exhibited in Staffordshire, Derbyshire,
Derby Art Gallery, Kirkcudbright and Castle Douglas.
My work is in private collections throughout the British
Isles, USA and Canada.
I usually work in watercolour, oil or pastel but
sometimes use gouache. Since moving to Galloway I
have spent more time exploring the use of colour.
In some of my more recent work I have painted much
more spontaneously, trying to let my feelings direct
what I am doing. This at times may take me into abstraction.
I have always gained inspiration from the wonderful
countryside and coastline of Scotland, in particular
Galloway, and since my move here I have had more time
available for art.
My work is constantly evolving and changing as I
adapt my style and approach. Since my move to Kirkcudbright
this has become more marked as I try to explore further
the boundaries of how I want to translate what I see
and feel into a painting. The work I produce is quite
diverse with several different styles, approaches
and subjects. This is quite deliberate and stems from
the excitement I feel when trying something new, be
it in composition, colour or style. In the past eighteen
months I have worked much more in oils and pastel.
I have exhibited my work locally in the Gracefield
Gallery, Dumfries and the Harbour Gallery, Kirkcudbright
as well as solo exhibitions at the Harbour Gallery,
Kirkcudbright and the Art Gallery, Castle Douglas.
My work can be viewed at Bourtree Studio, 2 Bourtree
Avenue, Kirkcudbright. Please make an appointment
to be sure that I am available.
