A VISIT TO THIS delightful museum of local human and
natural history conveys something of the charm and character of
Kirkcudbright and the Stewartry as a whole.
Founded
over a hundred years ago, the collections have grown to produce a display
of amazing variety. One of the most treasured exhibits is the "Siller
Gun" given to the town as a shooting trophy by James Vlth (later
James 1st of England) in 1587 - the year before the Spanish Armada. It is
now the earliest surviving sports trophy in Britain, and remarkably it is
still used for its original purpose, being awarded as the prize in
shooting competitions organised by the Incorporated Trades of
Kirkcudbright.
The museum houses an important collection of the book illustrations,
pottery and jewellery by Jessie M. King, along with work by her husband
E.A. Taylor, Phyllis Bone and other Kirkcudbright artists.
Core
opening times: all year, Monday to Saturday, 11.00am to 4.0Opm. Also
