Kirkcudbright's TolboothTolbooth Art Centre

High Street, Kirkcudbright
(01557) 331556

THE TOLBOOTH ART CENTRE provides visitors with an introduction to the story of the town's artists' colony.
Created in the town's historic Tolbooth, which dates back to 1629 and which formerly combined the functions of Town Hall, Courthouse and Prison, The Tolbooth now provides gallery accommodation for the best of the Museum Service's painting collection including works by S.J. Peploe, Charles Oppenheimer, Jessie M. King, Lena Alexander, Robert Sivell and many more.
The story of the Kirkcudbright artists is told through a 15 minute audio-visual show. But art is very much a continuing tradition in Kirkcudbright and the Stewartry as a whole, and throughout the season the studios on the upper floor are used by the current generation of artists and craftworkers, who welcome visitors to watch them at work.
Opened by H.M. The Queen in 1993, the Art Centre has already won a 'Thistle Award' for Tourism from the Scottish Tourist Board.
Core opening times: all year, Monday to Saturday, 11.00am to 4.00pm. Also Sundays in June to September inclusive, 2.0Opm to 5.00pm. There are no admission charges.
